Jonah 2

Jonah’s Prayer

1 Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from inside
Lit from the belly of
the fish: b

2 I called to the Lord in my distress, c
and He answered me.
I cried out for help in the belly of
Sheol: A Hebrew word for either the grave or the realm of the dead
Sheol; e
You heard my voice. f
3 You threw me into the depths, g
into the heart of the seas, h
and the current
Lit river
overcame me.
All Your breakers and Your billows swept over me. j
4 But I said: I have been banished k
from Your sight, l
yet I will look once more
LXX reads said: Indeed, will I look . . . ?

toward Your holy temple. n
5 The waters engulfed me up to the neck;
Or me, threatening my life
,
p
the watery depths overcame me;
seaweed was wrapped around my head. q
6 I sank to the foundations of the mountains; r
the earth with its prison bars closed behind me forever! s
But You raised my life t from the
Pit: Either the grave or the realm of the dead
Pit, Lord my God! v
7 As my life was fading away, w
I remembered
Yahweh/Yah: Or The Lord; the personal name of God in Hebrew; "Yah" is the shortened form of the name.
Yahweh. y
My prayer came to You, z
to Your holy temple. aa
8 Those who cling to worthless idols ab
forsake faithful love, ac
9 but as for me, I will sacrifice ad to You
with a voice of thanksgiving. ae
I will fulfill af what I have vowed.
Salvation
Or Deliverance
is from the Lord! ah

10Then the Lord commanded the fish, ai and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
